Relay For Life is back at Grace & Glory - June 9, 2012

Relay For Life LogoRelay for Life this year is on June 9, 4:00 PM –June 10, 7:00 AM, at the Present Fluvanna High School track.

If you aren't familiar with Relay for Life: It is the signature event of the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer by raising needed funds for continued research, programs, services, education and advocacy. For a number of years a Relay has been an annual event in Charlottesville.

While the Relay has a serious purpose, it is a fun event with entertainment, activities and opportunities for fellowship. You can even camp overnight. You can be a part of it by being a team member or making a cash donation – we hope both.

This is the first year Fluvanna County is having its own Relay. Grace and Glory was the first church to sign up and our team name is simply Grace and Glory Lutheran Church. They were thrilled to have us. Their goal is to have many churches participating but as of today only Antioch Baptist has also done so. Every day the list of teams grows.

Grace and Glory participated from 2007-2009 in the Charlottesville Relay for Life under Carol Parsons' able leadership. Hopefully all who joined then will do so again.

Sadly, cancer is no stranger to us at Grace and Glory. We have lost members to cancer. Happily, we have survivors in our midst - probably more than we know. Most of us have a personal interest to fight cancer. We are co-captains for our team as Roy is a cancer survivor and Marj lost her Mom and our nephew to cancer.

The Relay is well organized. The information packets and website are tremendous. The staff at American Cancer Society as well as the Fluvanna Relay leaders will give us as much support as needed. They were thrilled to have us on the roster.

We'd like to gather in the Library after worship next Sunday, February 5th. Surely, if you haven't joined a Relay for Life team before you will have questions. First one is usually "How far do we have to walk?". The answer is "only as far as you wish or can". And only around our high school track.

Please check out the website before this meeting - www.relayforlife.org/fluvanna. If you are not familiar with this event you will be amazed at what Relay has accomplished. We will have a hard copy of the website for anyone who can’t call it up at home.

The registration fee is $10.00. That covers the registration and a Relay tee shirt.

Monthly Men's Breakfast

Who doesn't like breakfast? This monthly event is open to confirmed boys and all the men. We meet at the Eagle's Nest at Lake Monticello the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 to 9:00 AM. Check back for the date of our next gathering in the new year. Questions? Contact Jeff Chervenak or Ray Weimer.

News at Grace and Glory

'Beyond the Walls' Sunday

"We can do no great things, only small things with great love." - Mother Teresa

It's been said that a church that keeps within its four walls isn't a church at all. So in late September of this year, Grace and Glory Lutheran Church, Palmyra, held a Beyond the Walls Sunday. Six community organizations had set up tables around the perimeter of the worship space, 'manned' by a volunteer of that organization; many were also members of Grace and Glory.

During the service and afterward, all were invited, even the littlest among us, to stroll the tables, talk with the representatives to learn about their organization, and receive an invitation to join as a volunteer.

Among the organizations represented were Fluvanna Habitat for Humanity, Fluvanna Meals on Wheels, Women's Prison Ministry, MACAA, Hospice of the Piedmont, and Pride, Inc. Also represented were the congregation's own Prayer Shawl Ministry, Annual Mission Trip to Hurley, and even a table for new initiatives was established.

Pastor Ken Albright said some people that Sunday were moved to accept one or another of the 'invitations' extended.

Read more about one of these new initiatives.

Hospitality Hour - Fair Trade

By using Fair Trade coffee and sugar packets during the hospitality hour after worship, we are supporting the Lutheran World Relief effort to promote the production of sugar and coffee in a manner that protects both the environment and the Third World small family farm.
