Evangelism

Social Justice Action Small Group

Our goal is to educate the congregation on issues of public policy and social justice. We encourage advocacy for the poor and disadvantaged, who have no voice, and promote ecological justice for our earth community.

We meet monthly to organize efforts to engage the congregation in advocacy, Fair Trade, letter writing for Bread for the World, and other projects.

Our current projects include:

Bread for the World

Bread for the WorldA collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. We are writing on behalf of the poor and as Christians we are called to do that.

The legislators believe that every letter represents the opinion of about 100 people so letter writing is both effective and important.

Grace and Glory is a Bread for the World Covenant Church, and as such has promised to support Bread for the WorldÕs mission of helping the poor and the hungry by: 1) financial support of Bread for the World, and 2) by letter-writing efforts to Congress on behalf of the poor and hungry.

14% of US households are hungry or at risk of hunger. One in four US children live in these households Ð that is, 17 million children. Both the Child Nutrition programs and Food Stamp funding are coming up for renewal before December 3rd. People need food stamps more than they have ever needed them before, and more people are using food banks than ever before. Food banks are running low on food as a result. If food stamps are cut, then all the church food programs and food banks together will not be able to make up the difference, and many more people in the US will go without food.

So this month it is critical that we write letters asking Congress to not cut food stamps or child nutrition programs; and following up with our letters of last April asking that the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit be made permanent so low-wage workers can keep more of their hard-earned money and be able to pay their basic household expenses.

Here are the addresses of our congressmen:

Senator Mark Warner
Suite 401,
4309 Commonwealth Ctr. Parkway
Midlothian, VA 23112

Senator Jim Webb
144 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Congressman Tom Perriello
1520 Longworth HOB
Washington, DC 20515

We encourage you to write these letters from home or after the Supper Fast for the Hungry, which is taking place on Sunday, November 14th. Thank you!

Fair Trade

To promote the sale of Fair Trade coffee and other items which help small farmers by eliminating middlemen. Fair Trade also helps the environment by protecting the rain forest from clear cutting, and encourages farmers to engage in sustainable production methods.

We will be selling Fair Trade items four times a year. If you are interested in ordering items at other times, please call Jean DeMarco at 434-589-5165.

Gleaning for the Food Bank

Thanks to the generosity of Fruit Hill Orchard on Route 53 in Palmyra, and the labor of a dozen adults and a handful of youth from Grace and Glory, the Fluvanna County Food Bank recently received 65 bags of apples, which were shared with the Senior Center at Fork Union.
